I am in college and l want a pet. l was considering a fish since it is the only allowable pet on-campus. l do not have much space at all. l know a lot of people say a 5 gallon tank is good, but l just do not have the room for that. What type of fish would be best to get, that l could put in a smaller tank, and the fish is still comfortable?

What type of fish is good for a smaller space

get a 2.5 gal. they have a filter and heater with them.

put a betta in. bettas have great looks, and are responsive (they come to you when they see you and follow your finger around)

bettas are really hardy and tough fish, they can handle minor sicknesses by themselves.

actually, with a betta, you could use a goldfish bowl. they can survive fine without heater/filter, but it is not the best condition for them.

for fish the bare minimum tank size is 2.5 gallons

if it has a heater and a filter you can add a betta fish

Please do not listen to people saying betta fish can live in one inch of water. That is actully very in-humane to do. Yes they can survive but its a means of SURVIVAL ONLY. It is been proven that bettas do amazingly in a large 10 gallon tank. If u do not have enough room for a 5 gallon I say do not get a fish. Its inhumane how they keep bettas in petstores. I had both of mine in 5 gallon tanks & they were very happy bettas. Mine only stayed in their small bowls for cleaning. They lived quite a long time & again if u do not have room for that please do not give into all that media crap & shove a Male or Female betta in some dinky fish bowl. Bettas live MUCH longer with decent filtration, an good heater ( just do not boil him lol) & keep his tank clean doing partial water changes. Personally again if u can not fit 5 gallons then do not get a fish. Im not being mean. I've had everything from neon tetras to bettas to gold fish to corys to koi fish. Would u be happy crammed into a tiny little bowl? Probably not. So do not do it to a fish. They deserve a happy quality life too!

A betta is minimum tank size is only 2.5 gallons but still should have a small filter and heater. I have one that fight easily on a night stand. Some really small fish like tetras, guppies, and some danios or mollies only need one gallon per fish but you need at least 3 of them. They all need filters and heaters too.

a japanese fighting fish (or bettas), they are beautiful and they do not need the water filtration. You can have them in a cup if you like, but a bit bigger would be nice ; )

get 3.5 gallon tank and put a single betta in it,
it needs a heater and filter. good luck try getting at least 5 gallon.

if you do not have room for a 5 gallon.. you really do not have room for fish.

maybe a betta in a 2.5 gallon.. that'd be about it
