How many smaller fish can I put in a 50 gallon aquarium

It is a rule of thumb that if u have fresh water fish then 1 inch for every gallon of water, ex. if u have a fish that will grow to 3 inches, it takes up 3 gallons of water.

If u have a saltwater tank it is 1 inch of fish for every 2 gallons of water :)

The more fish the more ammonia, & the more stress that is on the fish. The more stress, the more likely that they could get ick or a fungal infection due to a weak immune system.

Less is more.

in that sort of size tank you would be able to have up to either
15 - 20 small fish like you already have
or
9 - 15 Medium to large fish.

in my 53 gallon tank i have:

4 discus and 14 Rummy-nosed teras and have had no problem with the tank, it has been running for 9years and had over 600 baby discus out of it also

mollies get medium sized -- about 3-5''. very small tetras like neons u could easily have 50 or more -- put a piece of panty hose or sponge of the filter intake to keep them out. they sell sponges to keep fry out at pet shops. should work for neons too.

its good to use the 1'' per gallon rule as a rough guideline -- but neons r very small so u can almost count them as 1/2 a fish -- also wider bodied fish like cichlids & larger fish u need to be adjust the other way.

This rule applies to any aquariam. Imagine linning your fish along the bottom of the tank. If there is any space left, then about one inch per every fishis needed. I would not put more than 10 more fish in the tank.

I have a salt water tank and I would keep a fair ratio of fish/gallon being 1fish/ every 4 gallons. I used this for my med sized tangs and smaller clowns. So I would say for a 50 gal tank you would be safe with about 7-12 fish, depending on size and weather or not they are teritorial. I think though that fresh water fish run much smaller, so it could be much more. Hope this helps! Maybe you should talk to someone in aquatics.

It depends on the type of fish, ask the sales clerk wherever you go to purchase them.

As long as the tank is filtered properly, the rule of thumb is one inch of fish per gallon of water. So basically u could put 50 inches of fish into ur aquarium, as long as it is cleaned & filtered properly.

If ur tank is a hexagon or some other odd shape, that rule is basically thrown out & u could have about half that many.

Example: Say Mollies r full grown at 3 inches, then u could put 16 Mollies into ur tank. Always go by the adult length of the fish, not just how long they r when u purchase them. :)

The problem I had with a large tank and small fish was that the little fishies got sucked into the filter system. they were too small. You might want to bump it up to medium size fishies. Or you can buy three or four guppies and watch them multiply!!!
